Common questions about asthma clinical trials

Do you get paid for a asthma clinical trial in Canada?

Study visits and study-related assessments are provided at no cost to you, and many studies reimburse reasonable travel and parking costs. Some also offer a set payment per completed visit as compensation for your time. The amount differs from study to study, so the research site confirms it in writing before you consent to anything.

Is a asthma clinical trial safe?

No study can be described as risk-free, and the known risks are set out for you in plain language before you agree to take part. Every study here is authorised by Health Canada, reviewed by an independent research ethics board, and run under ICH Good Clinical Practice by a physician investigator. You are monitored more closely than in routine care, and you can withdraw at any time without affecting your regular treatment.

Do I need a referral from my family doctor?

No. You can contact a research site directly and the coordinator will go through your health history with you. With your permission the research team will keep your family doctor informed, which most people prefer.

Will I be given a placebo instead of treatment for my asthma?

Some studies compare an investigational medicine against a placebo, and where that is the case it is stated before you consent. In most studies of this kind the treatment you already take for asthma continues alongside the study medicine rather than being stopped, and the consent discussion covers exactly what would happen in your case.

What happens to my personal health information?

What you submit goes to the research team at the site you contacted so they can talk to you about studies. It is handled under PIPEDA and the applicable provincial health-privacy law, it is not sold, and you can ask to be removed from the list at any time.

Can I leave a asthma study after I have joined?

Yes. Consent is not a contract. You can stop at any point, for any reason or none, and it does not affect the care you get from your own doctor.
