About this research site

Bluewater Clinical Research Group has its origins with three local family physicians. Dr. Michael O’Mahony, Dr. John O’Mahony and Dr. Sean Peterson brought family medicine and clinical research together, with the aim of advancing medical knowledge and medical care through ethical, high-quality studies. Working alongside Sarnia-Lambton residents, physicians and nurse practitioners, the team continues to conduct leading-edge clinical research in the community. The site has been part of our research network since 1995.

How research started here

  1. 1969A family practice opens in SarniaDr. Michael O’Mahony begins practising family medicine in Sarnia-Lambton.
  2. 1995Clinical research beginsDr. O’Mahony starts conducting clinical studies with the TMG research network.
  3. 2005-2012Recognised as a top enrolling siteNamed “Top Gun” by TMG for study enrolment across eight consecutive years.
  4. 2016Bluewater Clinical Research Group is foundedFormally established by Dr. Michael O’Mahony, Dr. Sean Peterson and Dr. John O’Mahony.
  5. 2018-2020Top enrolling site againA second run of “Top Gun” recognition from the TMG network.

Dr. Michael O’Mahony, MDFounding physician · conducted clinical research in Sarnia from 1995 to 2023

He opened his family practice in Sarnia in 1969, began conducting clinical studies in 1995, and co-founded Bluewater Clinical Research Group in 2016. Dr. O’Mahony passed away on May 2, 2023. The research programme he started in Sarnia-Lambton continues at the site today.

What happens on a first visit
  1. 1A phone call firstA coordinator calls to go through your health history and answer your questions. Nothing is booked until you want it to be.
  2. 2Informed consentAt the site, the team walks through the study in plain language, including what is being tested and the known risks. You can take the document home.
  3. 3Screening checksIf you decide to go ahead, simple screening tests confirm whether the study is a fit. Being screened does not commit you to taking part.
  4. 4Your decisionYou choose whether to continue, and you can stop at any point without affecting your regular medical care.

Do I need a referral from my family doctor?
No. You can contact the site directly. With your permission the research team will keep your family doctor informed, which is standard practice in clinical research.
I am not a patient of the Bluewater physicians. Can I still take part?
Yes. The site works with volunteers from across Sarnia-Lambton, alongside local family doctors, specialists and nurse practitioners.
Will taking part cost me anything?
No. Study visits and study-related assessments are provided at no cost, and reasonable travel costs may be reimbursed where a study allows it.
How far will I have to travel?
Visits for the studies listed here take place at 481 London Road in Sarnia. The coordinator confirms the full visit schedule with you before you agree to anything.
What happens to the information I submit?
It goes to this site’s research team so they can contact you about studies. It is not sold, and you can ask to be removed from their records at any time.
